How did you start organizing and what’s your organizing philosophy?
When I moved to New York City from North Carolina in 2008, I went from a 1000 square foot apartment to one half that size, and quickly realized that I didn’t have room for all my stuff! Clutter bred clutter, and soon I was avoiding spending time at home and feeling overwhelmed and out of sorts when I was there.
At the time, I was teaching Spanish in a New York City public school while getting my Master’s Degree in Spanish Education. I was putting incredible time and energy into taking care of my classroom, planning lessons, and doing my graduate work, but completely neglecting my home, the space that should have been my place for rest and rejuvenation.
I hit my breaking point just before a week-long break, and resolved to spend some time taking care of myself for once by decluttering and organizing my apartment. A Professional Organizer was born in that week as I sifted through years of accumulated stuff, keeping only those things that I truly used or that brought me joy.
The change to my mood and energy was dramatic, and I knew I had to share what I’d learned with other women who were struggling as I had.
I honed my organizing superpowers coaching individuals, small businesses, and providing professional development to New York City public schools, helping smart but frazzled teachers get organized so they could focus on their students.
Through working with different types of people, I found my true purpose and joy in helping overwhelmed and overcommitted women accomplish what they never thought was possible: to create space and clarity from clutter and frustration.
When my son was born, I learned to navigate the unique organizing challenges that face busy, overcommitted moms. I saw first hand the incredible difference that having simple systems that the whole family can use made in my mood and energy levels.
My Mission in a Nutshell
My focus is to help women release some of our collective guilt and take care of ourselves and drives my organizing philosophy.
When women were finally told they could do anything, that somehow morphed into we have to do EVERYTHING; be the perfect partner, parent, friend, worker, and best version of ourselves. We're told that every aspect of our lives has to be flawless: our homes, our careers, our marriages, and what the heck do you mean your kid's birthday party doesn't have an elaborate Pinterest-worthy theme?!? No wonder we're completely exhausted! I'm here to help you create time and space in your home for you to relax and highlight what's truly important for you.
I believe that there is no greater gift you can give yourself than peace of mind, and the chaos of our surroundings significantly adds to our inner feelings of chaos.
I am not a minimalist; stark white rooms devoid of personality and warmth give me the heebie jeebies. Instead, I want to show you how to live with the items that you use and love, and give them space to breathe and shine.
My clients have described me as "just the right combination of pushy and nice,” which encapsulates me pretty perfectly. I’m going to push you to move outside your comfort zone (since your comfort zone has actually gotten pretty uncomfortable), but I’ll always do so with kindness, patience, and understanding.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do the Organizing for the Overwhelmed coaching programs work?
In my organizing program, we’ll start right where you are in your space and create specific goals and systems that fit YOU, your lifestyle, and your preferences for your home.
During our live video sessions, we’ll discuss what’s working and what’s not, and I’ll teach you my signature system for creating the home that you want, need and deserve.
You can learn more about my step-by-step approach HERE.
Can we really do all this over video calls, without you physically being in my home?
Absolutely! I conduct all of my sessions over video instead of in-person for a few reasons:
It allows me to be more accommodating to your schedule. Without wasting time on commuting, I’m free to schedule your sessions at the best possible time for you.
It allows me to see everything I need to see, while having you do the physical organizing work. This is a much more effective way for you to learn my method and establish systems that make sense for you than if I just came in and organized it for you.
The bottom line: based on experience, if I come in and organize things for you, your habits and patterns never really change and transformation just doesn’t seem to last. This is an opportunity to fully own and take charge of your home life.
Are you going to make me get rid of all my stuff?
You're a grown woman! I'm not going to make you do anything, least of all get rid of stuff you love. Getting organized is about gaining clarity, about removing the stuff that's getting in the way of what you love and use.
What I will do is teach you how to focus on and prioritize what's really important to you so you can create a home that truly reflects you. So while we’re talking about organizing, we’re actually going through a personal and professional transformation.
Based on everything I've read and heard about you, I know you're the one I want to work with. How do I get started with you?
